PowerPoint:  Helpful Hints

Why am I doing PowerPoint?

    • PowerPoint works best for things that need to be presented visually, not verbally.
    • The speaker must be central to the presentation.
    • Given reading or listening, people choose reading.

Bad Design = Ugly!

    • Make sure your text is big enough- go back 2 meters- can you still read it? (below 34 point)
    • 6x7 rule- No more than 6 lines per slide, no more than 7 words per line.  Too much text = too busy.
    • All capitals are too hard to read.
    • Different colored letters in words are difficult to read.
    • Keep things consistent: fonts, colors, bullets, etc.

Interactive PowerPoint

    • PowerPoint is not just for lectures.
    • It can be an interactive tool that students can use independently to gather information.
    • Slides can be linked to one another; small chunks of information can be presented.
    • PowerPoint can be non-linear- let the student choose where they want to go.
    • Video, music, many things can be added to PowerPoint.
    • There will more text in an interactive PowerPoint than a “lecture” PowerPoint.
