First Quarter:
Short Story Unit
Using the five short stories in this unit, 40 literary elements are introduced. Students will use these elements to analyze each story and develop a plot chart.
Writing and speaking are incorporated in this unit also. Students will review characters from several fairy tales and legends. Using the five aspects of characterization, they will describe each character in short paragraphs and compositions. Students will also write a conclusion for "Flowers for Algernon", share with others through peer conferencing, and read final products aloud to the class.
Vocabulary
25 words are given every other week. Words are chosen from the short story unit. Students must know the spelling and definition of the world of the word, as well as be able to use the word correctly in a sentence.
Second Quarter:
Grammar Unit
Students will review the eight parts of speech. This is an ongoing unit that she continue work begun in elementary school. Students will use worksheets, class notes, and exercises from the textbook to review Nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns, and interjections. Progress and mastery will be assessed by teacher made tests.
Vocabulary
50 words will be given from the next literature unit during the grammar unit. These two sets of vocabulary will introduce students to the words they will meet in drama unit.
Drama
Students will read the play "The Diary of Anne Frank" and study a unit on the Holocaust. The unit incorporates an historical overview of World War II and the events leading up to Anne Frank's family entering hiding. This unit also attempts to teach tolerance for differences by revealing aspects of the Jewish culture and religion, as well as an understanding of history's perception of the Holocaust.
