Introduction

It’s a beautiful day and your parents tell you, “Go get some fresh air!  You have to play outside.”

What do you do?  Are you all by yourself?  Do you have friends or family to play with?  Do you have a ball, jump rope, Frisbee, or nothing at all?  Do you know lots of activities or games to play?

Will you say, “There’s nothing to do”?

The Task

You and a partner are going to research the Internet to find a game or activity that you would like to learn to play.  You will put this game/activity on a form that will be used to develop a Backyard Games and Activities booklet.  If appropriate, you will be asked to teach this game to your classmates.   Games that involve playing in the water cannot, of course, be done in class but can be included in the booklet.  The Backyard Games and Activities booklet will be distributed to all students in grades three through eight.

The Process

1.  You must consider the following when selecting your game/activity:

A.     The game/activity must take 5 minutes or longer to play.

B.    Physical fitness benefits can be gained by anyone playing the game.   Benefits include cardio respiratory endurance, muscle endurance, muscle      strength, flexibility, and body composition.

               C.  The game/activity must have been researched on the Internet.

You may use only the following websites for getting information:

                     Outdoor Kids Games

                     Eldrbarry’s Active Games

                     Games that kids play

                     Playground Games

                     The Great Games List

D.  The game/activity must be one that can be played by most of the students in       your class.  (An example of activities that would not be appropriate would include:  a game that must be played on a tennis court, a game that requires special equipment such as a skateboard ramp, diving boards in the pool, etc.)

E.  Equipment may be used to play these games but it is not necessary.  Equipment should include common things such as:  balls, bats, roller blades, skateboards, Frisbees, etc.

         2.  Once you have selected the game/activity, go to the worksheet and print it out.

3.     Fill in the worksheet and give it to Mrs. Henry by Friday, May 17.

4.  If you plan to present this game to the class, please indicate this on your worksheet.  List the equipment that will be needed.  Mrs. Henry will see you to discuss when you will present this game.
