2.      Cafeteria prices are:  Elementary lunches are now $1.40.  Breakfast is .75 cents.  Please view the cafeteria’s page (Click here)  for menus and other information.  Students' lunch will be at 12:15.

3.  The S.T.A.R. Binder is a binder that your child will bring home every night.  Please visit the page called S.T.A.R. Binder by clicking hereBy knowing the folder comes home and needs to be checked every night, the students will build a routine.

4.      Your child will usually have one sheet of math, reading homework, and either spelling or high frequency word practice homework.  There may be occasions where your child is asked to do additional homework as well.  The Weekly Homework Sheet will describe the week’s homework and ask for a signature every night.  This ensures that your child is completing the homework and therefore practicing the skills necessary for mastery of the concept.  While there is usually no official homework on Fridays, I do encourage the students to read over the weekend.  It is a fun activity and they can read at their own pace and for their own enjoyment.

5.      The spelling ring is a group of activities that are designed for students to practice their spelling words while providing them with fun activities that are fairly easy to complete.  By giving students these activities, they not only get to study in a fun, innovative way; they also get to choose which activity they want to complete.  This gives them a sense of ownership.  In order to help your child practice his/her spelling words, I use these creative activities to keep it fun and interesting.  Your child will receive 2-4 activity cards with their spelling list on Monday.  They will be asked to pick only one of the activities (although they may ask to do more).  They will complete this during school.  On Wednesday we will take a pretest.  Anyone who does not receive a perfect score will be asked to pick another activity and complete that for any words they spelled incorrectly.  This activity will be due on Thursday.  Students may not pick the same activity two times in a row.  Every week the students will receive 2-4 new activities to choose from.

6.   The Student of the Week is a way to make each student feel special.  Every two weeks we will feature one of the students from the class.  They will have their pictures posted  and we will ask the family to send in pictures of the family, pets, etc.  Please wait to send photos until you receive the letter.

7.      I like to make birthdays very special.  While your child is in my room we will celebrate birthday’s with a special ceremony for which I will ask you to send in one photo of your child as a newborn, 2, 4, and 6 years old..  You may also choose to send in a snack to help your child celebrate his/her birthday.  I will send home a letter when we are celebrating your child's birthday.  It may not always be celebrated on the exact birth date due to other factors..  Please wait to send in the photos until you have received the letter.

8.     There are many things you can do to help.  As you may already know, there are always a million things to do and only so many hours in a day.  I also understand you have your own jobs and more to do in a day than you can already accomplish.  The request for volunteers is only if you can spare some time.  Some of the things volunteers typically do include:  explaining something from their occupation or culture to the students, sharing a talent, mystery reader, assemble file folder games, etc.  There are many activities that can be done at home and sent to school.  If you are interesting in volunteering, just write me a note and send it in with your child or email me.

10. The room theme this year is “Setting the Stage for Learning”.  I chose this theme because It coincides with my philosophy.  First, every student that enters my room is automatically a star.  Secondly, second grade is a transition year where students need to "come in to their own"  and start taking responsibility for their academic success.  We are setting the stage for learning this year, and in the future.   Hollywood and movies are a natural connection to this theme.  When you attend open house you will no doubt see that many of the room decorations relate to this theme.
