HOMEWORK

  • Every Monday your child will bring home a homework sheet in his/her S.A.F.A.R.I. binder.  This sheet will list the homework due each evening for the next day.  Please review the homework and make sure it is complete.  If your child is experiencing difficulty in any particular area, please write a quick note so I can address it.  After you have reviewed the homework, just sign on the right side of the sheet.  Then return this sheet with the homework in the communication folder.  Typically, there will be math, reading, and spelling homework to complete. There will usually be no homework on Friday.

Snacks

Students will have time for a snack every full school day.  I have purchased water bottles for them.  They will fill their water bottles every morning.  If you would prefer for them to fill their bottle with bottled water from home, that is fine too.  I am requesting only water be sent for their bottles for cleaning purposes.  Students may also purchase milk for their snack.   Milk costs .35 cents.  They may order white or chocolate.  Students may pay for their milk daily or $1.75 for the week.  Please put their milk money in an envelope or a zip lock bag with their name on it.  This prevents loose money on my desk with no owner.  If you would prefer your child not have chocolate, please let me know.  Each student will be bringing his or her own snack from home each day.  This eliminates the problem of preferences and allergies.  We will have a class snack provided by families on birthdays.

Helpers

Everyday a student will be chosen to be the “Student of the Day.”  This means that this student is the math assistant during the morning meeting and the line leader for the day.  It is the line leader’s responsibility to set a good pace for the line and to exhibit exemplary hall behavior for the other students to follow.  The other jobs include library monitor, floor monitor, pencil monitor, paper attendant, snack assistant, board monitor, "Packer Uppers", and center monitor.  Every student will get several turns to be a helper.

Birthdays

I like to make birthdays very special.  While your child is in my room, we will celebrate birthdays with a special ceremony for which I will ask you to send in one photo of your child at as a newborn, 2, 4 and 6.  You may also choose to send in a snack to help your child celebrate his/her birthday.  I will send home a calendar with the celebration dates.  Please wait to send in the photos until you have received the letter.

The top banana is a way to make each student feel special.  Every week we will feature one of the students from the class.  They will have their picture posted and we will ask the family to send in pictures of the family, pets, etc.  Please wait to send in the photos until you receive the letter.

Show and Tell

On certain days (usually once or twice a year), I will declare a "Show and Tell" Day.  Students are normally not allowed to bring in toys, but will be allowed to do so on these special days.  Although, I prefer they bring in something other than a toy (i.e. a postcard, a memento, a souvenir, etc.).  The main purpose behind this activity is to give the students a chance to share and to build their self-esteem and public speaking skills.
