2nd Grade Math

Parents,

This page will help you understand the various math concepts, and the daily math activities that your child will learn throughout second grade. I have also included online links to math games which your child can access for additional math practice and fun!

The Saxon Math program consists of five components:

  • The Meeting- The children begin each day practicing skills pertaining to the calendar,  counting, patterning, weather, graphing, time, money, place value, tallying, and problem solving.
  • The Lesson- New objectives are introduced through group activities.  The students  use materials , have discussions, and work together to help each other learn.
  • Guided Class Practice and Homework- The "A" side of the sheet is completed in class with the teacher's assistance.  Side "B" is sent home to be done independently. COMPLETING DAILY HOMEWORK IS IMPORTANT!
  • Number Fact Practice- Numerous strategies are used to assist students in learning number facts. Children recite the facts, use manipulative, fact cards, and fact sheets.
  • Assessments- Oral Assessments occur after ever ten lessons and  Written Assessments after every five lessons. All skills assessed have been practiced for at least five days.
