Science Unit 1 Plants (Pages A 8-A 27)

Vocabulary

Pages A8-A11

1. Minerals: natural, non-living materials that can be found in the soil that are important to plants. Plants need water and minerals to live and grow

2. Stems: Part of the plant that hold up the leaves, flowers, and fruits. Some stems are woody and some are vine-like.

3. Leaves: the part of the plant where food (sugar)  is made.

4. Photosynthesis: The process when green plants make food (sugar). Energy from the sun, water, and carbon dioxide are used to make the sugars.

Additional facts to know

Roots grow down into the soil and hold a plant in place. They bring in water and mineral to the plant.  They can also store sugar made by the plant.

Stems hold up the leaves, flowers, and fruit. Plant stems have tiny tubes in them that carry water and minerals to all parts of the plant. They also carry sugar made by the leaves.

Leaves can be broad and flat. Some are long and slender. Some look like needles. The leaves of a green plant make most of the sugars a plant needs to live and grow.

PagesA13-A17

5. Petal: the colorful outer part of the flower.

6. Pollen; A fine yellowish powder found inside the flower.

7. Seed: part of a plant found inside the flower or the fruit.

8. Pollination: The process when pollen is moved from one  flower to another. Wind, water, birds, bees and other insects move pollen from flower to flower.

9. Cones: part of the conifer plant that holds seeds or pollen. These are found on conifer trees such as spruce, pine, or fir trees.

10. Evergreen tree: Conifer trees that do not lose their leaves in late fall or winter.

Additional facts

Apples, peaches, peppers, and tomatoes are examples of fruits. The fruit protects the seeds inside.

During pollination, the pollen is moved to the center of the flower. The seeds begin to grow and the center of the flower swells to form a fruit around the seeds. The fruit protects the seeds inside.

The color and smell of a flower attract insects and birds.

Pages A 20-25

11. seed coat: the thin, hard outer covering of a seed. This protects the seed.

12. Seed leaf: The inside part of the seed that is used for food by the developing plant.

13. scattering of seeds: Some seeds fall to the ground under the plant. Wind and water also scatter seeds.  Animals can scatter seeds too by carrying them on their fur or feet or by passing them out of their bodies after digestion.

14. Life Cycle: the stages in the life of a living thing. ( Think: seed, young seedling, adult plant or baby ,teen, and  adult)

15. Germination:  when a tiny plant inside the seed begins to grow. The seed needs the proper temperature, the right amount of water and air, and enough space.

16 Seedling: a young plant beginning to grow.

17. Conifer: trees that have cones.
