Vocabulary words to know: lesson 1

community-a place where people live, work and play

physical features-different shapes of land and water

natural resources- things in nature that are useful to people

city-largest kind of community

suburb-a large, medium, or small community that is near a city

town-a small community, in which most people know each other

Characteristics of each community:

city-people and buildings are close together, tall buildings, noisy, huge population, subways, taxis, and buses used for transportation, no wide open spaces, parks and playgrounds, no yards, high crime,museums

suburb-people live in one-family homes with a small yard, often travel to the city to work, malls, travel by cars or buses

town-surrounded by farmland or forest, animals, larger homes and yards, small main street and small community stores, safer living, quieter, travel by car

country-open spaces, fields, larger distance between homes, very quiet, wild animals, wooded land, cars, trucks, four wheelers, tractors

Lesson 2 Vocabulary

settlement-a small village

immigrants-people from other countries who come to live in a new country

museum- a place to see old things, such as, paintings, clothing, and tools

Native Americans-American Indians, lived here long before the immigrant farmers came

history-a story of the past

gristmill-a place where water power once turned huge wheels to grind grains into flour

-
