Lesson 1 Vocabulary

Geography-the study of the earth and the way people use it

mountain ranges-groups of mountains

plain-flat land

desert-land where little rain falls and few plants grow

river-a long flowing body of water

lake-a body of water with land all around it

ocean-largest body of water in the world

coast-land that borders an ocean

island-a body of land with water all around it

peninsula-land with water on 3 sides (ex. Florida, Michigan and Alaska)

 

Lesson 2 Vocabulary

minerals-natural resources found underground (ex. gold, silver, salt, iron, and diamonds)

fuel-anything that is burned to produce heat or provide power for running machines

petroleum-brown liquid often called oil comes out of the earth

coal-black or brown rock used to make steel and produce electricity

oil is also used to make everyday things such as, ink, plastics, and some medicines

mining-the way many resources are taken from the ground

county-part of a state

 

Lesson 3 Vocabulary

lumbering-cutting trees and preparing logs for sale

lumberjack-works in a forest, cutting trees and removing branches from the tree trunks

wood pulp-mixture of cooked wood chips and water

trawler-a boat that uses a net, or trawl, to catch fish and shellfish

renewable resources-can be replaced if they are not used too quickly or completely (trees and fish are renewable resources)

pollute-to dirty the air and water
