Great Lakes Information Scroll to the bottom of this page to find an animation on how the Great Lakes were formed
alluvial fan - a sloping fan-shaped deposit of sediment located where a mountain stream meets the level land
base level - the level of the body of water into which a stream flows
bed load - larger particles rolling and bouncing along the bottom of a stream
capacity - a measure of the total amount of sediment a stream can carry
channel - the path that a stream follows
competence - a measure of the maximum size of the particles a stream can carry
deflation - the removal of loose rock material particles by the wind
delta - a triangular shaped deposit that forms when a river flows into a larger, quiet body of water such as a lake or ocean
desert pavement - a surface of pebbles and boulders left behind after sand and silt have been blown away
divide - the higher land that separates one drainage basin from another
drainage basin - the area of land drained by a river system
floodplain - a wide, level area that borders a river and is covered by its water during a flood
gradient - the slope of an area of land or of a stream
load - the eroded rock and soil materials that are transported downstream by a river
mass movement (mass wasting) - the downhill movement of sediments by gravity
meander - bends in a stream's channel, usually broad and looping
natural levee - an elevated ridge along a river's bank that is formed by the deposition of the river's sediment load
oxbow lake - a crescent-shaped body of water formed when sediments deposited by a river cut off a meander from the river
river system - the main river and all of its tributaries
sand dunes - wind formed mounds or hills of sand
sediment - pieces of weathered rock
solution - minerals dissolved in the water and carried with the stream flow
suspension - small particles of sediment carried within the stream and kept from sinking by the velocity of the stream
tributary - a smaller stream that flows into a larger one
watershed - all the land drained by a river system
