II. STUDENT ASSIGNMENT CALENDARS

A.    Reading and test schedule are made up monthly and will not change. 

If you are absent, then you will need to make up missed work. 

This includes snow-days and any absences.  Please plan accordingly. 

A grade of zero will be assigned until quiz, tests, and/or homework assignments are made up.

PARTS OF SPEECH--       "GRAMMAR GORILLA"    (TRY "GRAMMAROPOLIS")

1.) Noun: A noun is a person, place, thing, quality, or idea

    Examples: pencil, girl, supermarket, happiness

2.) Pronoun: A pronoun replaces a noun or noun phrase, not specific that is understood from context.
    Examples: he, it, they
3,) Preposition: A preposition describes the relationship between a noun or pronoun

    Example:  Examples: to, under, for, at, by, from such as: to the mountain
4.) Adjective: An describes a noun or pronoun.
    Examples: hairy, crazy, wonderful   
5.) Verb: Verbs are action or link the subject to another part of the sentence.
    Examples: to fly, to run, to be, jump, lived, IS, ARE
6.) Adverb: An adverb describes a verb, adjective, or adverb. It often ends in "ly".
    Examples: carefully, easily, barely
7.) Interjection: Show emotion. Usually starts a sentence. Two types Strong and mild
    Examples: Wow! Gosh, Darn
8.) Conjunction: A conjunction joins or connect words, phrases, or clauses (three types)
    Examples: and, or, but because

TERMS--

1.) Reasonable Doubt-- When the facts question the guilt of the defendant

2.) Unanimous-- Showing complete agreement

3.) Hung Jury-- Trial is run over because jurors cannot agree on the guilt of the defendant

4.) Verdict-- The outcome of the trial

5.) Acquitted-- The judgment of a judge or jury that a person is "not guilty" of a crime as charged

6.) Cross-examination-- The opportunity to question the defendant

7.) Exhibits in evidence-- Something that is legally presented before a court

8.) Abstain-- Voluntarily refrain from something

9.) Prosecution-- The lawyer who is trying to prove the guilt of the defendant

10.) Coroner-- A criminal medical examiner

11.) Testimony-- A statement under oath

12.) Ad-lib-- To "make up" as one goes along

13.) Deliberate-- To think through carefully in order to come to a conclusion

14.) Defendant-- The person on trial

15.) Open Ballot-- A vote by show of hands

16.) The Greeks created the first early drama.  

17.) Drama is one of the earliest literary forms.

18.) The Greek philosopher, Aristotle, divided all drama into two types.

19.) Tragedy tells of the fall of an individual.

20.) Comedy describes the regeneration or reformation of a group or a society.

21.) The word drama originated from the Greek word “dran” which means to do or to act.

22.) Plays/Drama are meant to be performed by actors.

23.) A script is the words in a play or what you read from.

24.) Stage Directions in italics and/or brackets, intended to show the actors when and how to move and speak.

25.) Staging costumes, sets, lights, actors, sound devices, anything heard or seen in a performance.

William Golding

The Nobel Prize in Literature 1983

Biography

William GoldingWilliam Golding was born in Cornwall in 1911 and was educated at Marlborough Grammar School and at Brasenose College, Oxford. Apart from writing, his past and present occupations include being a schoolmaster, a lecturer, an actor, a sailor, and a musician. His father was a schoolmaster and his mother was a suffragette. He was brought up to be a scientist, but revolted. After two years at Oxford he read English literature instead, and became devoted to Anglo-Saxon. He spent five years at Oxford. Published a volume of poems in 1935. Taught at Bishop Wordsworth's School, Salisbury. Joined the Royal Navy in 1940 and spent six years afloat, except for seven months in New York and six months helping Lord Cherwell at the Naval Research Establishment. He saw action against battleships (at the sinking of the Bismarck), submarines and aircraft. Finished as Lieutenant in command of a rocket ship. He was present off the French coast for the D-Day invasion, and later at the island of Walcheren. After the war he returned to teaching, and began to write again. Lord of the Flies, his first novel, was published in 1954. It was filmed by Peter Brook in 1963. His other books are:

In 1980 he won the 'Booker Prize' for his novel Rites of Passage. He retired from teaching in 1962. After that, he lived in Wiltshire, listing his recreations as music, sailing, archaeology and classical Greek.

William Golding died in 1993.

William Golding's  Lord of the Flies  was published in England in 1954,
