PREVIEW SELECTION GUIDE—

To Kill a Mockingbird is a rites of passage novel about the changes in two siblings lives, Jem and his sister, Scout. It is from her point of view that the story is told. Like all children they enjoy adventure and fantasize about a mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley, who appears during unusual situations. Fun for the children involves running up to Boo’s front steps, peaking through the window, and running home. After Jem loses his trousers during one of these escapades, the children resort to merely talking about the Radleys. Although their mother dies when they are very young, they enjoy a happy life with their father, Atticus Finch, a kind, compassionate, lawyer who lives in a small rural town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s. He is assigned a big court case that causes Atticus and his family to be the victims of many racist remarks and sometimes-violent actions.
