These words are found so often in our reading that it is much easier to sight-read them than to sound them out. A student who struggles with high frequency words often works so hard to read that fluency (the rate at which one reads), accuracy (the number of words read correctly), and comprehension (the ability to understand material read) are affected. Once a student is able to recognize high frequency words, he or she can often read faster and with fewer errors. His/Her overall comprehension of material read should also improve. Please practice these words at home with your child. Check back on a regular basis, as words are added as they are introduced. **These words were added on May 20th.

Easy Games to Play:
I suggest to parents that they make two identical sets of word cards using words from the above list. Use these cards to:
1. Play Concentration--Mix cards up and turn them face down. Take turns selecting two cards. As the cards are turned over, read the word on each. If the cards match and are read correctly, you get to keep them and take another turn. If the cards match, but are not read correctly, turn them over and the other player takes a turn. If the cards do not match, turn them over and the other player takes a turn. Continue until all cards are matched. The player with the most word pairs wins.
2. Play Go Fish--Deal five cards to each player. Each player looks at his/her cards to see if there are any pairs. These are put down on the table. The first player then asks the second player, "Do you have a (word). If the second player has the given word, he/she gives it to the first player who then gets another turn. If the second player does not have the given word, he/she says, "Go Fish" and the first player draws a card from the deck. Continue to play until all cards are used. The player with the most pairs wins.
3. Build Sentences--String words together to build a sentence and have your child read it back to you. Dictate a sentence to him/her and have him/her build it using the appropriate word cards.
