The Saxon Math Program consists of five major components:

The Meeting--The children practice skills related to the calendar, counting, patterning, weather, graphing, time, money, place value, tallying, and problem solving and mental computation. | |

The Lesson--New objectives are introduced through group activities. The students use materials, have discussions, and work together to help each other learn. | |

Guided Practice and Homework--Each lesson is accompanied by a short practice of the new objective and a review of previously introduced concepts. Side "A" is completed in class with the teacher's assistance. Side "B" is to be done independently at home. Parents are asked to read the problems, to check student work, and to provide help when needed. COMPLETING DAILY HOMEWORK IS A MUST! | |

Number Fact Practice--Various strategies are used to help children learn the number facts. Children practice the facts by reciting them orally, by using fact cards, and by completing fact sheets. Children are encouraged to recall facts by using the strategies taught, rather than their fingers. | |

Assessments--Written
and Fact Assessments are administered after every five lessons. All
skills being assessed have been practiced for at least five days. |

The children have begun to combine sets. Saxon Phonics is designed to teach the children various songs, raps, and techniques of remembering facts so that students memorize them. They are discouraged from using their fingers.

"Adding 1" Facts
Students have learned the "adding 1" facts. They have learned that when one is added to a number, they are to look for the larger number and add one. They have learned that adding one is like counting up by one, that the answer is the next number.
0 + 1 = 1
1 + 0 = 1
1 + 1 = 2
2 + 1 = 3
1 + 2 = 3
Facts such as 4 + 1 = 5 and 1 + 4 = 5
3 + 1 = 4
1 + 3 = 4
are referred to as "switch-around"

Students have learned to identify the doubles plus 1 facts. In these facts, the numbers being added together are next to each other when we count by 1's. When solving a doubles plus 1 fact, we double the smaller number and then add one.
