Business Education Classes  

 

 

One-third of the 30 jobs projected to grow the fastest this decade are in technology, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  It is essential that high school graduates are proficient in the use of computers in order to enter the job market and continue on to higher education.

Ø Business Economics 1/2 year/credit

Business Economics will meet the NYS economics course requirement for graduation.

Business Economics guides students through a logical way of thinking about economics. Group activities, individual projects, graphic representations, computer simulations, on-line research and reporting, as well as current events will be utilized.  

Ø Business and Personal Financial Math 1 year/credit

The Business and Personal Financial Math course is a specialized full year math course that may be used to help students fulfill one of the three units of mathematics required for a Regents Diploma. 

This course is designed to help students understand the complex financial world they will encounter during their lives, as well as prepare students for more complex college level business programs.

Ø Career and Financial Management (formerly Introduction to Occupations) ½ year/credit

The world of work and adult life is explored in this class.  Research your personal career interests and aptitudes.  What higher education needs do you have? Learn what the working citizen should know about getting and keeping a job. How will you budget and spend the millions of dollars you will earn in the 40 years average work-life as an American employee? Utilize the adult world simulation program Virtual Business to make decisions, and mistakes, to learn!

Ø      Keyboarding for College and Careers ½ year/credit

This course is designed to prepare students for the digital word processing world encountered in higher education and in today’s business environment. Emphasis is placed on developing speed and accuracy at the keyboard.

Proficiency with fundamental computer applications will be achieved through the following topics: basic document formatting, file management, proofreading, composing at the computer, e-mail, recording notes from oral presentations, and desktop publishing.   The creation of a job folder, containing all the letters and information necessary to secure employment, is the final project.

Ø      Entrepreneurial Studies/Business Ownership ½ year/credit

Interested in starting your own business this summer or some time in the future? The Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies has been contracted by the New York Department of Education to maintain a web site for you to use as an on-line text book.  Students will progress through 40 units of study on how to start and operate their own business.  The course culminates with the construction of a Business Plan for the operation of your own company and to present to financiers.

Ø IT Computer Basics ½ year/credit

If you have time for but one computer class, this is the one to take. This course prepares students for the electronic world with a basic level of computer hardware/software understanding. Topics include:

  1. Computing Fundamentals ; how to buy and care for your computer and electronic devices
  2. Key Applications; Microsoft Office Suite and other useful software
  3. Living Online; safe, effective, and efficient use of the Internet
  4. Current Topics in Technology

Ø      Multimedia Applications  ½ year/credit

Create exciting multimedia presentations! Pump up your projects in other classes, prepare for college, or just have fun with your new found skills.  Productive web searching, Engine use, and interesting websites are also covered as the introduction to creating movies, cartoons and presentations via several different applications which are readily available (free!) to the general public.  

Ø    Service Learning Credit  ½ year/credit

Service Learning is an independent study program, with a teacher supervised curriculum. This individualized program may bear high school credit or community service recognition. The duration and time required can be flexible. The activities may also be flexible and creative, but must fill a need within the school and/or local community.

Formal and informal evaluations will be conducted on a regular basis, Additionally, a final reflective essay, completed by the student, must be completed before a pass/fail credit may be earned.  Usually reserved for junior and senior students.

Ø    7th Grade Careers & Computers  ½ year/credit

In this second year of Home and Careers, students learn how to use computers to enhance their lives at home and at work. Personal finance, time management, study skills, consumerism, careers and computer use comprise the course curriculum. This is a mandatory course for all middle school students.

Ø   Web Page Design ½ year/credit

Learn Web Page design using the powerful, industry standard software.  Project-based course teaches the basics of design, layout, and spicing up your web pages.  Java code, graphic manipulation using Photoshop, FrontPage, and Adobe software are just some of the topics covered.
