Chapter 5  key ideas:

1. Explain the purpose of an operating system
2. Describe and compare operating systems to include purpose, limitations, and compatibilities
3. What steps do you mentally take to determine the operating system based on customer needs
4. How do you install an operating system
5. What is special about navigating a GUI
6.  Identify and apply common preventive maintenance techniques for operating systems
7.  What are some common ways to troubleshoot operating systems

Make sure you know:  Fundamental operating systems chapter of IT Essentials version 4.0 consists of the following critical concepts:

1. Almost all modern operating systems are multi-user, multitasking, multiprocessing, and support multithreading.
2. The application requirements may exceed the requirements of the operating system. For the application to function properly, it will be necessary to satisfy any additional requirements.
3. A user must register Windows XP after installation. The user must also complete the verification to ensure that he/she is using a legal copy of the software. This will enable the user to download patches and service packs.
4. Students must know the booting sequence of Windows XP. Once they understand Windows XP boot process, Windows 2000 will be easy to follow.
5. Regedit is a power tool that you should use with great care. Using Regedit incorrectly may cause configuration problems that could require you to reinstall the operating system.
6. Students must know how to install and uninstall applications using Add or Remove Programs utility in Control Panel. The benefit of using the Control Panel is the utility tracks installation files so that the application can be uninstalled thoroughly in the future.
7. The restore point utility only operates on OS and application files. This is important because it means that any data saved between the last restore point and present will be kept.
