Unit 3:  Career Exploration, Planning and Selection (3 weeks)

Honestly, there really is a relationship between career planning and reaching your lifelong goals. You do have goals, don't you!? What is a career cluster? What are your personal abilities and aptitudes and why does it even matter that you figure them out? do you understanding the changing nature of the workplace and the relationship of lifelong learning leading to career success? 

Hone in the skills necessary to  search and select an appropriate career.  Become familiar with the job search process and the preparation and presentation of individual materials required to participate in the process. The Career Selection Process:

Decide the lifestyle you desire.  Really think about it. (urban, rural, personal time, family, vacation, how you spend your time and money)

Determine your abilities and aptitudes. (What's the difference?)

Determine your personality and how it effects your career choices

bullet

Chose a career cluster and examine the careers within the cluster to find related jobs that you may be interested in doing

Research how much education you will need to pursue the career you want

Letter to Self in High School, 2 weeks before graduation

 

(Use format found in Keyboarding Book on page 130)

Step 1

write the body of the letter, using Word.  Save as lettertoself in your folder for this class

Greet yourself!  Describe how you image you will be at this point of time in your life.  Looks, friends,     after school job, car, etc....????

2nd paragraph

Describe yourself as you are now.  Include your personality, pets, siblings, lifestyle information, what you like, what you dislike, friends, what's most most important to you, favorite food, what really bugs you, Favorite piece of clothing... current height and weight, favorite movies and music, and special things both good and bad that occurred during the year.  include a current picture if you can,  write ten goals they would like to accomplish by their senior year when they get the letter back

Using the information from your Guidance Direct or NYCAREERZONE.ORG Portfolio or other assessments, record what the data says you should do for a living.  Talk about that career.  NOW...record what you think that you want to do for a living especially if it does not agree with the career portfolio information.  Tell yourself about your post high school education plans.  Where are you going to college or for more training?  Are you going into the military?  What branch?

Describe your personality as defined by the personality tests that you have taken in class.  You may copy and paste information

Step 2

Put a pic of yourself and/or and avatar Avatars Everywhere: 27 of the Best Avatar Makers

 

Spell check and grammar check the letter.  Use "block letter" format.  See page 130 in the keyboarding book for help on style.

 

Step 3

Desktop publishing!  Design your own letterhead for the top of the letter.  You will be doing a matching envelope too!  It will be printed in Black/white.  Design it so it will look good that way!

 

Step 4

Put in the addresses and top information necessary for a proper letter (page 130)

 

Step 5

Have your letter graded

Have your letterhead graded

Have your envelope graded

Fold your letter and place in the envelope, tuck in the flap

Turn into Mrs Wilson for safe keeping for the next 5 years!!

Desktop Publishing Performance Quiz

  1. Create a  Yellow square, a Red circle, and a blue triangle using your drawing toolbar
  2. Put the red circle on the bottom, the blue triangle on top of that, and the yellow square on top.  Size them so I can see all of them at the same time (overlap them)
  3. Now connect them all as one image
  4. I will grade from your monitor.  You must show me that you can move them all together as one image.
  5. After I see this, you must UNGROUP them, Change the Yellow square to TRANSPARENT, size it larger than all the other shapes, place it on top of the other images and show me that I can now see through it. Regroup items so they are still able to be moved together.
