Computer Notebook
Debugging-Working the kinks/ problems out of a computer program
-Notebooks and laptops are the same thing
-A tablet is different because the monitor can swivel
-Tablets let you write on the monitor
QWERTY keyboard- the normally keyboard that we use
PDA-Personal digital assistant (blackberry)
Workstation- a computer station
Super computer- a computer with lots of brain power; very
expensive; used for research
Mainframe- one brain going out to dummy monitors
Trojan- when a bad guy controls your computer do what they want
it to do usually download with out you know it from a website
Types of computers
Mini
Micro ,Notebook, pc
Types of platforms or operating systems
Mac OS
Windows
Linux
UNIX
Network- Microcomputers that are often linked together
Centralized Systems – a network
In order to be connected to a network there must be a network
interface card installed
Dram- dynamic and it changes based on what the computer needs
Local Area Network-LAN-small number of computers linked
together
Wide Area Network-WAN-a network used to connect computers over
a long distance
Metropolitan Area Network- MAN- a network connecting computes
in a metropolitan area
Campus Area Network-CAN- A network connecting computers in a
limited are such as campus or military base
Home Area Network- HAN- A network connecting computers in a
home environment
Server- A computer that controls the other computers in the
area network
Client/ server – A network that has PCs connected that can
function on their own as well as connect to access information
Hardware- The stuff you touch (monitor, keyboard, mouse
printer)
Software – Programs/ Applications
Input Device- Anything that gets information in your PC
(keyboard, scanner, mouse)
Output Device- Gets information out of your computer ( printer,
monitor, headphones)
Random Accesses Memory- RAM- short term memory only on when
computers are on
RON - long term memory only on the hard drive
Megahertz (MHz)- clock speed or speed of your processor, speed
of RAM
Volatile- easily erased
Multitasking- operating sever different things on your computer
at the same time
How is a monitor measured?
- In inches on a diagonal
Ergonomic- designed for your body
Scanning- making a digital copy of an image
Hard Copy- It’s printed
Soft Copy- Digital
Dot Pitch- Monitors resolution measured by
Resolution- How good it looks
FireWire- a special cable to connect your camcorder (Digital
Video) to your computer so you can edit the video. Many different ends of the
cable so one cable doesn’t work with everything.
PORTS:
Universal
Service Bus (USB)- Most common post
RAM- is
only working when computer is on; more RAM is used & needed the more you
multi-task; “ Temporary Memory”
ROM- is
your hard drive is “Permanent Memory”
Anything
stored on a computer is written with zeros and ones ( H=010010); Binary Code
Optical Drive
CD or DVD Drive
Reads with a laser
Dot Matrix Print, or Ink Jet (like the old color HP printers @
MWCS) Print by making lots of little dots of ink; INK IS EXPENSIVE!
Cold Boot- reboot (turn on) computer from when it was totally
off
Most computers problems can be fixed by just rebooting
Laser Printer- Prints using tower like a copy machine Black &
white. Less expensive to use
ROM- Read only memory
Plotter- Big Printer; maps blue prints
Back-up- means to copy your data for safety; sometimes uses a
tape back-up drive
Bios- inner brain and guts of your computer instructions; tells
the computer how to boot up
Problem Slow Computer-
Computers not on the internet- Might have to much software for the computers memory; Need more; may have to much movies or pictures; Hard Drive to full (ROM)
Computers and why they are slow on the Internet:
-Virus- Mini program when executed (turned on) does something to your computer; Norton Utilities McAfee.com
-Spam-
-Spy ware-
Every computer should have protection against virus spam and
spy ware
In order to be connected to a network, the computer system must have which hardware item installed inside?
-Network Interface Card
Backing up your data.....
-May use a tape
Fire wire...
-is the name for a video cable
The resolution of a monitor or TV is measured...
-by dot pitch
Volatile means
-easily erased
ROM....
-Is long term memory
P2P-Peer to peer network your computer is “Hooked Up” to everyone connected in your P2P
· Example: Lime Wire
Passwords and Usernames
Don’t use anything, should not have anything that identifies you personally, password should be 6-9 characters long, alpha-letters, numeric-#, and symbols
Value added card it looks like a credit card loaded with money used online to buy with. Can buy from AAA, Visa, and MasterCard
Gift Cards can use to buy online
· Example: Wal-Mart, Amazon, I tunes
Privacy- freedom from unauthorized intrusion
Secure sites- http with an s after it closed padlock after site
· A closed padlock is at the bottom of the screen
· Never give out your social security number
Scanner- like a copy machine
· Digitizes info
· Able to be read by the computer
Plug- in- program that allows your computer to play certain files
Hot-swappable- USB or Fire wires (Fast Data Cable ex. Video) do not need to shut off computer to plug in or out
Excel- Microsoft’s Spreadsheet
Spreadsheets- Good for calculations and number compression. Has cells to put data into. Can make charts and tables.
Encryption- passwords are sent over the internet in code so it can’t be stolen
Domain name in Addresses
Fair use- copyright laws to protect creators
Uninstaller-program to remove software
Formatting- means to change the look of a document
Virtual Reality- pretend world created wit h computer
Picture file formats- .jpg, .giv, .Jpegs, .tiff, .Bpm
Music file formats- .MP3, .wav, .midi
Video file formats- .mpeg, .avi, .wmv

Websites- .EDU- Educational
.CA- Comes from Canada
.UK- comes from England
.COM- Business
“Cookies”- Files left behind by websites on your computer
Portrait- is vertical
Landscape- is horizontal
