__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Lesson Title Lesson Overview Codes*
Online Identity Theft: Information Is PowerNew! Students learn about the methods criminals use to steal identities online. They develop an identity theft prevention tip list and propose ways to communicate their tips to their families.

Making Good DecisionsNew! Students take a true/false quiz about the risks to teens regarding online sexual victimization by adults. They use an analysis of the results as the basis for a classroom discussion of how they can harness the power of the Internet while avoiding risky behavior that can lead to involvement in criminal sexual activity.

Your Online ImageNew! Students explore the consequences of unintended audiences viewing their social network profiles. They consider four key characteristics of social network sites and how they might affect teens as they try out new identities. Then, students collaborate to write a letter to parents demonstrating their understanding of issues related to unintended online audiences.

Managing PasswordsNew! Students take a quiz to determine the strength of their passwords. They learn the reasons for building passwords that are hard to crack and practice creating passwords that follow recommended security rules. They devise a way to communicate what they have learned to their families.

Safeguarding Your Stuff, My Stuff, Our StuffNew! Students explore real stories of cyber security threats and damage and learn to think responsibly about securing their families' data at home and when using public computers. They think creatively about how to talk with their families about cyber security.

Manners, Cyberbullying, & Ethics

Lesson Title Lesson Overview Codes*
Acceptable Social Networking?New! Students explore a scenario in which an angry student creates a false online identity in order to seek revenge. They explore ways to resolve the situation and develop a list of tips to help other teens avoid cyberbullying situations.

Connected, 24/7New! Students explore how bullying behaviors on social networking sites and cell phones can affect teens around the clock. They identify positive actions that bystanders can take to alleviate a particular scenario. Then they write a letter to the editor discussing the positives and negatives of social networking sites, messaging, and cell phone technologies used by teens.

Lesson Overview Codes*
Evaluating Online ResourcesNew! Students learn to think critically about their choices of Web sites for research by using an evaluation checklist that discusses the key characteristics of trustworthy sites. A sampling of sites on a topic of high interest to students provides the lesson context. Optional strategies for the use of Web 2.0 tools are included. Extend the lesson to examine the use of Wikipedia.

 "Improve your security IQ"

Make it fly again with lightweight Linux

If you’re shelfing your trusty road warrior mostly because it just runs … so … slow, consider that it’s not always the laptop’s fault. Most modern operating systems aren’t designed to give you only the web, email, document handling, and a little multimedia, but there is an entire OS realm that is that can make your old system seem new again. Here are a few free, open-source recommendations and what an old laptop might get out of them:

bullet Puppy Linux: puppy_cropped.jpgVery slim (97 MB) distribution, but retains a basically smooth and polished interface, with apps to cover common computer uses.
bullet Damn Small Linux: For really, really fast and light performance with a straight-up interface. A system smaller than 50 MB that can run on a machine with a minimum of 16 MB memory (assuming you can boot/load it on there).
bulletXubuntu: Puts the Ubuntu methodology and software support into a lighter, XFCE-based desktop (check out its look and newest features here). For an even lighter kind of “Damn Small Ubuntu,” try Fluxbuntu.
bullet gOS: gos_cropped.jpgFor those who live inside their browser, gOS isn’t so much a gimmicky “Wal-Mart OS” as a webapp-focused version of Ubuntu, with a lightweight window manager (Enlightenment) and an OS X-like bottom dock containing most of what you need

Bandwidth Glossary

T-3/DS3: Dedicated digital transmission of data and voice at the speed of 45 MB per second; composed of 672 channels.

Fractional T-3: one of more channels of a T-3DS3 line used for data and voice transmission at the speed of less than 45 MB per second.

T-1/DS1: dedicated digital transmission of data and voice at the speed of 1.5 MB/sec composed of 24 channels.

Fractional T-1: one of more channels of a T-1 line; used for data and voice transmission at the speed of less than 1.5 MB/sec

Cable modem: dedicated transmission of data through cable TV wires at a speed of 2 MB/sec

DSL: digital subscriber lines have a dedicated digital transmission speed of up to 32 MB/sec.

Chapter 5  key ideas:

1. Explain the purpose of an operating system
2. Describe and compare operating systems to include purpose, limitations, and compatibilities
3. What steps do you mentally take to determine the operating system based on customer needs
4. How do you install an operating system
5. What is special about navigating a GUI
6.  Identify and apply common preventive maintenance techniques for operating systems
7.  What are some common ways to troubleshoot operating systems

critical concepts:

1. Almost all modern operating systems are multi-user, multitasking, multiprocessing, and support multithreading.
2. The application requirements may exceed the requirements of the operating system. For the application to function properly, it will be necessary to satisfy any additional requirements.
3. A user must register Windows XP after installation. The user must also complete the verification to ensure that he/she is using a legal copy of the software. This will enable the user to download patches and service packs.
4. Students must know the booting sequence of Windows XP. Once they understand Windows XP boot process, Windows 2000 will be easy to follow.
5. Regedit is a power tool that you should use with great care. Using Regedit incorrectly may cause configuration problems that could require you to reinstall the operating system.
6. Students must know how to install and uninstall applications using Add or Remove Programs utility in Control Panel. The benefit of using the Control Panel is the utility tracks installation files so that the application can be uninstalled thoroughly in the future.
7. The restore point utility only operates on OS and application files. This is important because it means that any data saved between the last restore point and present will be kept.

MOUSE CALIBRATION

You should actually do this every year. Even more often if you spend a lot of time on the computer. This is recommended by Kim Komando (the computer guru) in one of her recent emails.

I was shocked to see how well this works, and how far off mine was! To re-calibrate your mouse, click and hold on the capital G below, then drag it toward the small g.

If it doesn't work immediately, you might want to clean your mouse, as the calibration is off.

Goodness, Silly!! You'll believe anything
