Former SUNY Potsdam student trying to sell bagged Glens Falls air

Monday, November 22, 2010 - 5:07 pm

POTSDAM – A former SUNY Potsdam student is trying to sell plastic bags filled with Glens Falls air for $5.

Brandon Mendelson, whose website is at www.brandonmendelson.com, says his venture is “supposed to be something goofy and fun.”

Details on ordering are at his “Buy Prepackaged Air!” website at http://prepackagedair.com.

A graduate of the SUNY Potsdam class of 2006 who dropped out the graduate program in 2007, Mendelson describes himself as a humorist, social critic, and disillusioned philanthropist. While at Potsdam, he was an active blogger and worked on the Raquette student newspaper, among many other projects.

Today, he says he is selling “small, plastic bags filled with ‘premium Glens Falls air’ that I collect in Glens Falls’ City Park.

“When I woke up with the idea of selling people nothing on October 20, my wife gave me the look all wives give their husbands when they propose something stupid, and told me I had to give people something for their money,” Mendelson continued. “I said, ‘Like what?’ and she said, ‘I don’t know. How about air?’”

Mendelson said any profits he makes will “not go to charity. Unless you consider charity to be two white, college educated people living in a studio apartment as charity. If you do, God bless you.”

He said he hopes the venture will promote his Twitter account, @BJMendelson. He says he has 800,000 people following him on Twitter, “but I’ve been working to get rid of those people. My goal is to reach new fans, not followers, who think I’m funny and will buy my book if it comes out.”

He noted the venture is “a stunt. Hopefully a stunt that will give people something to laugh at or mock together instead of fighting over stupid, meaningless crap.
