Individual Counseling
There may be a time in a student’s life when a little extra support can be very helpful. Sometimes a student needs help with a challenge they are experiencing at home, academically or in social situations. Individual counseling can provide the student an opportunity to gain problem-solving skills and a sense of control over their emotions.
Individual counseling with a student is practical and solution focused. The goal in the counseling process is for the student to gain the skills necessary to assess his/her problem, develop strategies to deal with it and reassess after the plan has been put into action. Students learn the skills necessary to deal with challenging situations instead of someone else solving it for them. Students that gain these coping skills and problem solving strategies use them throughout their lives and are better prepared to handle future challenges.

Group Counseling
Group counseling is a powerful way for students to find support and commonalities, learn about themselves from their peers and problem solve. Group counseling themes this year will be a family support groups and groups for children looking to develop a positive and safe environment in school.
Family groups or “Banana Splits”, for the k-5 classes, offers students a chance to find common ground as they share their struggles of living in a non-traditional household. A traditional household has both parents living in it and a non-traditional household consists of any other kind arrangement. It’s more typical these days to find the later and often times those students struggle in silence about the loss of a natural parent.
