Located in a major dairy producing county in the state, dairy farming and related agri-business account for the bulk of the employment within the district. Residents are also employed in various industries, colleges, and health services in adjoining communities. Nearby colleges include State University of New York at Potsdam; Clarkson University in Potsdam; State University of New York College of Technology at Canton; and St. Lawrence University in Canton. This area is in close proximity to the Lake Placid Olympic Region, the Thousand Islands resort area, and the Canadian cities of Ottawa and Montreal. Recreational opportunities are numerous for both the winter and summer enthusiasts. Within our region the Coles Creek State Park, located on the St. Lawrence River, provides excellent fishing, boating, and waterfront activities. Uncrowded golf courses are located in the picturesque towns of Waddington and Madrid. The Adirondack Park, located minutes to the south, provides an excellent opportunity for the hunter and outdoorsman, in addition to St. Lawrence Valley activities. Churches of major denominations and various civic and service organizations are located within the district and the neighboring communities. The educational community is located equidistant from the communities of Canton, Potsdam, Massena, and Ogdensburg, and is only minutes from the border between the United States and Canada. |
